WHAT IS COLLAGEN?
Collagen is a protein that serves as a key structural component of connective tissue such as skin, bones, and ligaments. Dermis, the inner layer of the skin, contains large amounts of collagen whose fibers form a supporting mesh responsible for the skin’s mechanical characteristics such as strength, texture, and resilience.
WHAT HAPPENS TO COLLAGEN OVER TIME?
As with any material, collagen is subject to wear and tear: it slowly breaks down over time. Skin cells called fibroblasts are capable of producing collagen. As we age, the skin’s ability to replace damaged collagen diminishes and more gaps and irregularities develop in the collagen mesh. This process eventually leads to wrinkles, facial sag, and rough skin texture. In addition, age spots, uneven skin tone, spider veins, and dilated capillaries can show up on the face. Thus, one important goal of prevention is to reduce collagen breakdown and increase its supply.
CAN COLLAGEN IN AGING SKIN BE STIMULATED?
Yes it can. The appearance of fine lines and even deeper wrinkles especially around the lips, cheeks, and forehead as well as crow’s feet around the eyes, smoker’s lines and frown lines, acne scars, and loose skin around the neck and jowls can be substantially improved.
HOW IS COLLAGEN STIMULATED?
The Cynosure® Apogee Elite™ laser at the Nd:Yag wavelength employs a revolutionary patented laser process which targets and gently heats collagen in the dermis while protecting the epidermis.
WHAT WILL THE PROCEDURE ITSELF BE LIKE?
You and the doctor will wear safety glasses to protect your eyes during the procedure. The doctor will use a small hand piece that touches your skin to deliver the laser light. This will take less than 30 minutes. Side effects are minimal and normal activities can be resumed immediately.
DOES IT HURT?
Because the laser’s Smart Cool™ is so effective, patients say it feels like a slight snapping sensation. A topical anesthetic may be used.
WHERE SHOULD I GO FOR COLLAGEN STIMULATION?
Only a licensed professional with the knowledge and skill required to achieve optimum results should perform collagen stimulation treatments.
CAN COLLAGEN STIMULATION BE COMBINED WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?
Absolutely! Many patients take advantage of the office visit for Botox®, a purified protein that reduces frown lines between the brows, as well as fillers like Juvederm™ that correct fine lines and enhance lips. Daily topical usage of SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic and a retinol like Green Cream help rebuild collagen and reduce wrinkles.
